Should I swap to another fitness plan?

My gym

We often think we just need the perfect workout plan to finally get fit. Maybe it’s a new gym challenge, a trendy app, or a fresh routine that promises results in 30 days. But here’s the truth: it’s not the plan that makes or breaks your progress – it’s the system behind it.

Workout plans come and go. Some are effective. Some are exhausting. Many work temporarily, until life gets in the way. And when they stop working, we blame ourselves or start searching for the next best thing.

But what if the problem isn’t the plan at all?

James Clear says it best: “You do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.” A good system is what keeps you moving when motivation fades. It’s how you stay consistent, work around obstacles, and keep showing up.

Most of us think we have a system, but we’re actually following a plan – without the structure to support it. A system is what makes a plan stick. It’s how you plan for your weaknesses, adjust for real life, and keep momentum even when things aren’t perfect.

Your system for exercise might include:

  • A realistic schedule that works around your energy levels and commitments
  • A “default” movement routine for low-motivation days (like a 10-minute walk)
  • A tracking method to help you see progress and stay accountable
  • A backup plan for when your day doesn’t go as planned
  • An understanding of why movement matters to you – beyond just physical goals

And just like a good diet system isn’t about perfection, a good exercise system isn’t about hitting every workout. It’s about making movement a normal, non-negotiable part of your life – one that adjusts with you, not against you.

So before you swap to another fitness plan, ask yourself: do I have a system that helps me succeed, even on the hard days?

The right plan is great, but the right system? That’s what makes it last.
