Why your fridge layout is making you tired

August 23, 2025

We like to believe that our food choices are a matter of discipline. We tell ourselves that if we just had more willpower, we’d choose the kale over the crackers every time.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: Willpower is a finite resource. By the time you get home at 6:00 PM after a day of decisions, your willpower is exhausted. At that moment, you aren’t choosing what’s healthy. You’re choosing what is visible and easy.

If you want to change how you eat, stop trying to change your mind. Start changing your kitchen. Here is how to architect your space for effortless nutrition.

1. The eye-level rule

Marketing experts have known this for decades: Shelving at eye level sells the most products. Apply this to your fridge.

Most of us hide our vegetables in the crisper drawer at the very bottom, which is literally out of sight, out of mind. By the time we remember the spinach is there, it’s turned into a bag of green liquid.

The fix: Move your washed, prepped greens and colourful veggies to the middle shelf at eye level. Move the condiments and soda to the bottom drawers.

2. The friction factor

We gravitate towards snacks because they have low friction. You just rip open a bag. Compare that to a pomegranate or a head of broccoli that requires washing, peeling and chopping.

The fix: When you get home from the store, process your obstacles. Chop the peppers, boil the eggs and portion out the nuts. If the healthy choice has the same friction as a bag of chips, you’re 50% more likely to choose it.

3. Clear vs opaque

Visual cues trigger hunger. If you see a clear jar of biscuits on the counter, your brain starts a countdown until you eat one.

The fix: Use the opaque for cravings, clear for nutrients rule.

Store leftovers and treats in solid-coloured tupperware or wrap them in foil so you don’t see them every time you open the fridge.

Store pre-cut fruit and veggies in clear glass jars. Make the vibrant colours work for you.

4. The Zen countertop

Your kitchen counters should not be a storage unit for processed food. If the cereal box is always sitting out, you will graze on cereal.

The fix: Clear the counters. The only things allowed to stay out are a bowl of fruit, a bottle of water or your high-quality collagen (remember: not all are created equal!). Everything else goes behind a cabinet door.

Designing for the future you

Kitchen architecture is an act of kindness for your future self. It’s acknowledging that the 6:00 PM version of you is going to be tired, hungry, and looking for the path of least resistance.

By spending 20 minutes setting up your environment, you aren’t just meal prepping. You’re building a sanctuary where the healthiest choice is also the easiest one.

The 5-minute audit: Walk into your kitchen right now with fresh eyes. What is the first food you see? If it isn’t something that makes you feel vibrant, move it.
