We often blame ourselves when we can’t stick to a goal. Not disciplined enough. Not smart enough. Not ready.
But what if the issue isn’t you? What if the issue is the room you’re in?
One idea has stuck with me for years, and it’s this: environment dictates performance.
This means we don’t rise to the level of our goals – we fall to the level of our surroundings.
We behave according to the environments we show up in. And that one shift in perspective can change everything.
When things feel hard, check the room
If you’re in an environment where no one is working on themselves, growth feels like climbing uphill.
But when you’re surrounded by people who normalise progress, accountability and curiosity; suddenly things feel lighter, more doable. Even exciting.
That’s not magic. It’s environment doing its quiet work.
I remember when I wanted to build a creative habit like writing more, sharing more, actually hitting “publish.”
I tried for years on my own.
But when I joined a small online writing group where sharing drafts and giving feedback was the norm… it stopped feeling scary.
I showed up. I finished things. I improved.
It is simply because I entered a space where it was normal to do the thing I once found impossible.
Environment makes the hard stuff easier
We pick up habits, beliefs, and energy from those around us… whether we mean to or not. So here’s a reminder:
Want to eat better? Spend time with people who value their health.
Want to start a business? Step into a room where people talk ideas, not just problems.
Want to grow? Go where growth is expected, not feared.
You don’t have to do it alone
The beautiful thing is – you don’t have to wait for the “perfect environment.” You can create micro-environments that support you:
– Put your journal on your pillow to remind you to reflect.
– Join a free online community with people who share your interests.
– Swap a 30-minute scroll for a podcast that feeds your curiosity.
Even one change can shift your whole direction.
Final word
If you’ve been stuck, don’t just look inward.
Look around.
Because the right environment doesn’t just support your goals – it activates them.
You don’t need more willpower. You might just need a new room.
Want to go deeper?
Start by asking yourself: Who or what am I surrounded by right now?
Then ask: Does that bring me closer to the life I want or further away?
