Nine rules for everyday wellness

Everyday wellness

May 1, 2025

These are the nine rules I come back to again and again. They’re not strict routines, but gentle anchors. Here’s how I practice each one in real life: flawed, imperfect, but consistent.

1. Move a little every day (the 10-min rule)

“When in doubt, start small.”

There are days when the gym feels impossible. On those days, I pull out the mat in my living room and stretch for 10 minutes – sometimes just five. Other times, I dance to one Beyoncé track in my kitchen. The goal isn’t a workout, it’s a reset. The 10-minute rule has saved me from all-or-nothing thinking. Once I start, I usually keep going, but even if I don’t, I still moved. And that’s a win.

2. Fuel like you love yourself

“Eat to nourish, not punish.”

There was a time when food came with guilt. Now, I ask: Will this energise me? I’ve learned to slow down and listen to my body. I still enjoy chocolate and noodle,  but I also love prepping colourful grain bowls on Sundays. I’ve found a ready-to-drink meal I trust and I no longer skip meals when I’m busy. Eating well isn’t about restriction. It’s a love language.

3. Protect your energy

“Silence isn’t avoidance, it’s self-preservation.”

This one was tough for me. As a recovering people-pleaser, I felt guilty saying no. But over time, I realised I wasn’t helping anyone if I was running on empty. I started saying “maybe later” instead of “yes” to everything. I’ve muted noisy group chats and set Do Not Disturb on weekends. The peace I’ve found in those boundaries? Priceless.

4. Check in with yourself daily

“One question: How do I feel right now?”

My check-in habit started with sticky notes. I’d place one on my mirror with that question. Over time, it became a reflex. I now journal for five minutes most mornings using a simple prompt: What do I need today? That self-awareness helps me course-correct before stress becomes burnout.

5. Build your inner circle intentionally

“Shared values > Shared interests.”

In my 30s, I began to outgrow some friendships – not out of drama, but evolution. I realised I needed connection that felt real. Now, I nurture friendships that feel mutual and soul-giving. We might not speak every day, but we get each other. A walk-and-talk with one of these people does more for my wellness than any podcast ever could.

6. Your environment shapes your habits

“Tidy your room. Curate your feed.”

Clutter clouds my mind. When I tidy my space, even just my desk, it shifts my whole energy. I’ve swapped my phone wallpaper for a calming mantra, replaced harsh lighting with warm lamps, and unfollowed content that makes me feel “less than.” Your space talks to your nervous system. Make it speak kindness.

7. Honour rest as a ritual

“Stillness restores.”

I used to treat rest as something I had to earn. Now, it’s something I schedule. I have a Sunday night ritual: shower, tea, essential oils, and a screen-free hour. No phones. Just silence or soft music. That one ritual changed my whole week. Rest isn’t weakness, it’s where I refuel for the life I want to lead.

8. Make self-care non-negotiable

“Rituals > emergencies.”

There’s a tea I drink every afternoon. It’s small, but it signals: pause, breathe, recalibrate. Self-care isn’t always a bubble bath. Sometimes, it’s logging off on time or leaving your phone in another room. I no longer wait to be exhausted to take care of myself. Prevention is power.

9. Progress over perfection

“Celebrate the tiny wins.”

I used to think I had to be all in or it didn’t count. But now, I track progress like: Did I pause today? Did I show up for myself, even a little? I keep a “Done List” to celebrate small wins. That shift in mindset has helped me build more consistency than any perfect plan ever did.
