Evening easy wind-down movement

Supine twist at home.

February 11, 2025

After a long, demanding day, winding down with gentle movement can be the perfect way to release stress, relax your body, and prepare for a restful night’s sleep. Incorporating easy, calming exercises into your evening routine help with physical recovery, centre your mind and find peace at the end of the day. Here are some simple, effective wind-down movements you can try tonight, along with product recommendations to enhance your experience.

Bedtime stretching routine

Stretching doesn’t just feel good, it can improve flexibility and circulation while signalling to your body that it’s time to relax. Try a seated forward fold to release your hamstrings and lower back, or roll your shoulders to ease tension.

I use a stretching strap to hold stretches gently without straining. It helps improve flexibility and increases my range of motion while reducing the risk of injury. It is also a wonderful tool to help me listen to my body.

Foam rolling session

Foam rolling isn’t just for athletes! A quick session in the evening can help relieve muscle tightness, improve blood circulation, and promote relaxation. Focus on your calves, quads, and lower back to maximise the benefits. In my opinion, it’s one of the most cost-effective ways to enhance your fitness routine and achieve great results. Invest in a durable foam roller that will last a lifetime.

Tai Chi or Qigong

Tai Chi and Qigong are ancient practices that blend gentle, flowing movements with focussed breathing. These practices are excellent for calming the mind, reducing stress, and improving sleep quality. To get started, I recommend choosing and sticking to one guided video. This way, you can make a one-time purchase without the need for ongoing app subscriptions.

Calming walk around the house

Sometimes the simplest movements are the most effective. Taking a few slow laps around your home, focussing on mindful breathing, can help you release mental clutter and transition into a calmer state. Learn more about mindful steps here.

Legs-up-the-wall pose

This restorative yoga pose is the perfect way to wind down. Simply lie on your back and extend your legs up against a wall. It’s excellent for reducing leg swelling and encouraging relaxation. For extra comfort, I like to place a pillow under my hips.

Gentle yoga flow

Yoga is a fantastic way to stretch tired muscles and release built-up tension. Focus on slow, restorative poses like Child’s Pose, Cat-Cow, and Supine Twist. These movements help decompress your spine, ease stiff joints, and calm your nervous system.

Combine movement with mindfulness

Pair your wind-down movements with mindfulness exercises to deepen your relaxation. Focus on deep, intentional breathing and create an environment that quiets your thoughts. For example, use a diffuser with calming essential oils like eucalyptus or sandalwood to set a peaceful tone, or add a Himalayan salt lamp for a warm, soothing glow.

Establishing an evening wind-down routine centred on gentle movement can transform how you transition from a hectic day to restful sleep. By incorporating these simple exercises and elevating the experience with a few thoughtful products, you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and ready to embrace the day. So, unroll your yoga mat, slip into your coziest slippers, and allow your body and mind to truly unwind – you’ve earned it.
